Areas of Practice


For the last 15 years, Anne has consulted on research funding, principally in engineering and the physical sciences, from basic research to commercialisation. Prior to that she worked at a senior level in the government’s main funding agency for science and technology research. She has a track record of funding success (totalling many millions of dollars) in various MBIE funds, as well as Marsden and Centres of Research Excellence. She worked to prepare several universities for PBRF in 2012 and 2018. She advised the University of Sussex on an RE round.

Research funding


Anne was the General Manager of the Materials Accelerator, a large multi-organisation research grouping hosted by the University of Auckland. She was the Interim Director of the Centre for Asia Pacific Excellence – North Asia.

Research management


Anne has worked on strategy development with large research and professional organisations. She was the founding Managing Editor of New Zealand Strategic Management, a refereed business journal, where she learned the theory and practice of strategy from the world’s best: Michael Porter, Gary Hamel, CK Prahalad. She was managing editor of a case-study series on public sector innovation, published by Vic Link.

Business strategy


Anne was the New Zealand Publisher for Oxford University Press. She established successful lists in law, history, literature, social science, and reference. Later, she set up Te Papa Press and guided it through the first few years, publishing important titles on New Zealand and Pacific art, natural history, and the environment, including the highly successful Awesome Forces.
